The Psychology of Torture

The Psychology of Torture

Author: Sam Vaknin

There is one place in which one’s privacy, intimacy, integrity and inviolability are guaranteed - one’s body, a unique temple and a familiar territory of sensa and personal history. The torturer invades, defiles and desecrates this shrine. He does so publicly, deliberately, repeatedly and, often, sadistically and sexually, with undisguised pleasure. Hence the all-pervasive, long-lasting, and, frequently, irreversible effects and outcomes of torture.

In a way, the torture victim’s own body is rendered his worse enemy. It is corporeal agony that compels the sufferer to mutate, his identity to fragment, his ideals and principles to crumble. The body becomes an accomplice of the tormentor, an uninterruptible channel of communication, a treasonous, poisoned territory.

When You Eat at the Fridge

When You Eat at the Fridge

Author: Karin Witzig

I spent a few days at a resort in Mexico this past summer for a friend’s wedding. I’ve known her since the 2nd grade and it was a really fun time hanging out with familiar faces.

It was also hot, so very hot. I took sweating to a whole new level. During the afternoon wedding in full sun on the beach, I discovered parts of my body that I didn’t know could sweat. Toes, chins, elbows, you name it… I was drenched. Despite the intense heat, it was undoubtedly the most beautiful and moving ceremony I have ever had the privilege to witness.

Choosing Happiness

Choosing Happiness

Author: Jodie Foster

Did you know that it’s up to you?

It’s actually your choice.

You can choose to be happy instead of waiting around for it
to suddenly appear out of nowhere one day and land in your
lap. Happiness is called upon and cultivated.

Now keep in mind, this is my personal perspective of
happiness. You might have a different view. Everyone has a
unique view point, especially where emotion is concerned.
But, nonetheless, I like my outlook on happiness. It helps
me to see that I am the creator of my own thoughts and state
of mind. It is my choice what feeling I choose to have on
any given day. This does not mean I don’t go with the flow
of feelings, but that I can choose at any given moment to
change what it is I desire.

How to Get Rid of Your Worries: 5 Golden Rules and a Warning

Suresh was a worried person when he came to me . "Sir what if I don’t get placement ? I feel that I will fail in the coming exam. I don’t know how my family will face this!" It seemed to me he was imagining all problems and getting very much worried!! This is the case of many of us; we keep worrying about events that have only remote possibility to happen. Once a friend of mine put on footwear and later knew that a dog may have bitten it the day before. The moment he knew it he began to worry; what if my leg had an unseen wound and the dog was a mad dog? Added to this was the doubt what will happen if he takes a vaccination and there is a reaction to it? Finally he had to consult many doctors to convince that he was worrying for nothing!! In this short article I try to give five methods to avoid unnecessary worries.

The Seven Keys to Child Obedience

The Seven Keys to Child Obedience

Author: Anthony Kane

Learning obedience is an important part of child development. This is the tool that allows you as parents to train your child. Through obedience your child will learn self-control and develop other positive character traits that he will need as an adult.

However, obedience cannot be forced upon the child. Parents who simply command their children will foster resentment, which will eventually lead to rebellion. In fact, some researchers feel that poor parenting techniques contribute to the development of oppositional defiant disorderin some children. Although you can punish a child for not obeying, this will not foster any long-term obedience. When the child reaches his teen years and becomes more independent, punishment will only serve to destroy the already faltering parent child relationship.
